4-character Train Reporting Numbers

Positions 3 and 4

The 3rd and 4th positions indicated the identity of the train:

Express passenger and freight trains (excluding trips) were allocated individual identity numbers to each district/divisionbetween 00 and 99
Parcels trains were allocated individual identity numbers to each district/division between 00 and 29
Inter district/division empty coaching stock (ECS) trains NOT to work a train were allocated individual identity numbers to each district/division between 30 and 49
Class 2 and local ECS trains were allocated route numbers in each district/division between 50 and 99 (see below). The route numbers apply in both directions.
Freight trips were allocated trip numbers in each district between 00 and 99.

Below is an example of a table of the route numbers for the North Wales area, taken from the WTT for 1976. although, some of them had already ceased running. Notable are the codes for Rock Ferry, Liverpool Lime St to N.Wales, Runcorn-Chester and New Brighton-Wrexham. Even Aberystwyth-Devil's Bridge appears. The Route Indication Number table did not appear in the 1984-85 working timetable; all Class 2 trains were given new 'headcodes' and 2D53 was no longer used for Crewe to Bangor trains.
